Banks grantlee kieza5/20/2023 Newspaper editor, columnist, foreign correspondent and ABC broadcaster, he knew countless luminaries of his time, including Rudyard Kipling, Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Haig and Henry Lawson. He fudged his age to enlist during World War I, ultimately driving an ambulance before commanding a horse training unit during that conflict. As a young man he befriended Breaker Morant, and covered the second Boer War as a reporter. But there is more, much more to Banjo's story, and in this landmark biography, award-winning writer Grantlee Kieza chronicles a rich and varied life, one that straddled two centuries and saw Australia transform from a far-flung colony to a fully fledged nation.īorn in the bush, as a child Banjo rode his pony to a one-room school along a trail frequented by outlaw Ben Hall. He gave us our unofficial national anthem, 'Waltzing Matilda', and treasured ballads such as 'The Man from Snowy River' and 'Clancy of thĮ Overflow', vivid creations that helped to define our national identity. 'Banjo' Paterson is rightly recognised as Australia's greatest storyteller and most celebrated poet, the boy from the bush who became the voice of a generation.

Whit stillman jane austen5/20/2023 Why did it keep getting shoved to the back burner? It was planned to be on the back burner. She’s a beautiful widow, unabashedly living off the hospitality of her brother-in-law’s family while seeking to secure her own future by marrying off her daughter, Frederica (Morfydd Clark), to the wealthy, dimwitted Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett). Stillman, the director of late-20th-century cult classics like Metropolitan and Barcelona, takes certain liberties bringing Austen’s slim novel of letters to life, but his Lady Susan, played brilliantly by Kate Beckinsale, is nearly as Machiavellian as Austen wrote her. (Read to the end and you’ll find Austen’s original text in the appendix.) And earlier this month, Stillman published an equally funny companion novel, Love & Friendship: In Which Jane Austen’s Lady Susan Vernon Is Entirely Vindicated. Tomorrow, the director’s hilarious Love & Friendship, a 12-years-in-the-making movie adaptation of Austen’s book, hits theaters. If Whit Stillman has his way, that may change. Then again, it’s likely that few have cracked Lady Susan, the comic, epistolary, zinger-filled novella about an unscrupulous, gold-digging widow that Austen penned shortly before embarking on an early draft of Sense and Sensibility, and never published in her lifetime. Jane Austen’s novels are delightful, amusing, entertaining, and witty, but even her most zealous fans might hesitate to call her laugh-out-loud funny. The promise chaim potok sparknotes5/20/2023 Eventually, Rivkeh decides she wants to resume Yaakov’s work. Asher spends a lot of this time drawing pictures, which Aryeh feels are a waste of time. Rivkeh is “almost destroyed” by Yaakov’s death for months, she seldom leaves her room, and sometimes Asher hears her talking to Yaakov. One day, when Asher is six, Rivkeh receives news that Yaakov has been killed in a car accident. So did Asher’s Uncle Yaakov, older brother of his mother, Rivkeh. When Asher was small, his father, Aryeh, traveled extensively on behalf of the Rebbe. Unlike any of these ancestors, Asher, born in 1943 in Brooklyn, has a gift for drawing. Asher’s grandfather, an ingenious scholar, had also traveled as an emissary of the Ladover Rebbe, until he was brutally murdered by a Russian peasant. Observant Jews, on the other hand, work to “bring the Master of the Universe into the world,” like Asher’s ancestor. As a child, Asher was taught that non-Jews-people of the sitra achra-behave like the Russian nobleman. After that, Asher’s ancestor began to travel, supporting Jewish scholarship and learning everywhere he went. The nobleman had burned a village and killed people during a fit of drunkenness. Asher Lev introduces himself as “the notorious and legendary Lev of the Brooklyn Crucifixion.” He is also “an observant Jew.” Because Asher’s dual identity has generated gossip and myths, he will now offer a defense of himself.Īsher explains that he is descended from a “ mythic ancestor,” the estate manager for a wealthy Russian nobleman. Randall munroe author5/19/2023 And the more I got interested in science, the more of the stuff I thought was funny showed up there. MUNROE: I’ve just always found that stuff in general is funny. GAZETTE: Do you remember when you first thought that science might be funny? The interview has been edited for clarity and length. He spoke with the Gazette about the humor in science, why kids ask better questions than adults, and whether his curiosity will ever run dry. On Tuesday, Munroe visits Sanders Theatre to discuss the second “What If?” book in an event sponsored by Harvard Book Store, Harvard Library, and the FAS Division of Science. In his “What If?” series, Munroe applies serious science to outrageous scenarios - “What if you built a billion-story building?” - and patiently explains the science behind the often-disastrous consequences. In one of the more unusual scientific career pivots you’re likely to hear about, Randall Munroe has parlayed his physics degree and experience working at NASA on computers and robots into fame as a cartoonist, blogger, and author. |
